N A T E

Nate tried to be properly concerned about Harry, but it was nearly impossible to feel anything beyond the fear radiating out from his eggs. The babies inside probably weren’t much more than complicated grouping of cells and a yolk sac, but he could feel their terror. At least, that was what he assumed was happening. Who knew what was going on in there?

Harry, maybe. And no doubt Everard. He’d likely dissected the eggs of his enemies in the name of science or douchebaggery. Nate couldn’t decide which.

A new quiver of terror from the eggs shot through Nate.

No one is going to harm any of you, he thought at them. I promise.

Weirdly enough, that seemed to help. The eggs settled a bit, although he still felt traces of their tension. They wanted to be back in their nest, in the sun, preferably with Nate snuggled around them, the bare skin of his stomach against their shells. The thought warmed Nate’s heart, and he itched to get back home so he could be with his babies.

The amazement in Perry’s voice upon seeing his egg hatch echoed through Nate’s mind. Baby.

Nate suddenly understood how an egg could be competitive, and he found himself wondering what his eggs

would be like when they got older and closer to hatching. His own tiny babies.

His heart fluttered.

Jessica waited for them outside, standing at the side of Alistair’s Jaguar. It was already running. Nate found himself ushered into the back seat of the car, the nestlers clustered around him. Alistair sat at his side.

“Home?” Jessica asked.

“Please,” Alistair said. “And thank you.”

“Of course, sir,” she murmured, then began to drive.

Presumably back to Aurora, but Nate was lost and had no idea where he was. He trusted Jessica, though, with her grave professionalism and calm demeanor. He trusted Alistair, too, Nate realized. Nate still wasn’t sure how he felt about being mated, apparently for life, to a man—dragon—he barely knew, but he trusted Alistair to keep the eggs safe, and also to keep Nate safe. He didn’t like feeling vulnerable and needy and dependent upon another, but at the same time, the eggs clamored inside his mind, and his heart, and maybe even his soul. He wasn’t alone anymore, like it or not.

The eggs needed him. Nate felt it in every cell of his body, and it made him wonder about some of the things Sebastian and Everard had said about omegas right in front of him, like he wasn’t there, or like he didn’t matter. Like that Nate should be crazy, and how Nate’s sanity was a testament to how he must be Alistair’s mate. It seemed very farfetched to him. He was just an ordinary human, and nothing at all like Perry, who seemed utterly perfect in every regard.

An omega like that was a true mate for a dragon. Him? He was just some medieval scholar who’d made some bad decisions on Grindr.

A medieval scholar with a clutch he loved more than life itself.

Lost as he was in his thoughts, Nate was surprised when they pulled up in front of Alistair’s building.
